orange fire

Sky at Sunsetorange fire,
you are turning
my sleepy mind
and my fevered skin
into overwhelmed particles
of scorched desert dust

sauna nights

my apartment:
a rice cooker
-and I’m the rice-
this week.

the wet heat,
-nothing like the east coast-
but still,
pretty bad.

especially,
if you don’t have a/c
and you have to drink
chilly white wine
-like sauvignon blanc-
to pass out,
-I mean fall asleep-
at night,

since there’s no way
you’ll drift off
in a room
that’s so steamy,
devoid
of sleepy-dreamy.

heat exhaustion

Sky at Sunsetdeep blood
beats down
upon the casas
by the sea

far too warm
unseasonably
they say
each year worse
than the last

their homes
not cooled
historically
unnecessary

‘tis
no longer true
the warmth
wears them
down

they sleepily ask
where is fall?
the relief,
the sweet crispness

for they are
weary
